Mirror, Mirror
When she met herself.
When people see my “Crazy Sisterhood” series, they are very curious in my use of abstraction to convey the complex range of human experience – grief, wonder, insolence, frankness, whimsy, insecurity, vulnerability....
I originally conceived “Mirror, Mirror” as a painting to reflect the distorted self image many women experience, some of which has gnarled roots entangled in age-old fairy tales. From very early on, girls are exposed to messaging across stories, media, peers and adults that the fairest of all – physical beauty – is a golden ticket for positive attention, belonging and success.
Unlike other sisters in this series, this girl has no name for she is Every Girl / Every Woman who has searched the mirror, yearning to love what reflected back.
